Analyzing the Impact of Artificial Intelligence Implementation on Mental Health and Learning Performance in Schools

Abstract
In recent years, the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) technology into schools has emerged as a pivotal trend in educational transformation. This mixed-methods study comprehensively analyzes the effects of AI implementation on students’ mental health and learning performance. In the qualitative phase, semi-structured interviews with students, teachers, and school administrators in three major Iranian cities were thematically analyzed, revealing four core themes: positive learning experiences, psychological and emotional challenges, ethical concerns and educational equity, and the need for psychological support and empowerment. Findings indicated that AI enhances personalized learning and provides immediate feedback, thereby improving academic performance and motivation. However, increased anxiety, competitive stress, feelings of isolation, and ethical concerns were also identified as negative consequences. In the quantitative phase, survey data from 400 students and 100 teachers were analyzed. Structural equation modeling results showed that the positive impact of AI on learning performance was primarily mediated by personalized learning and school support, while students’ mental health was highly influenced by technological equity, psychosocial support, and digital literacy. The conceptual model developed in this study underscores the necessity of simultaneous attention to technological, psychological, and ethical dimensions in AI implementation in schools, and recommends that policymakers, educators, and parents not only leverage the opportunities of AI but also proactively address its psychological and social challenges to foster both mental well-being and academic achievement among students.
