English

Purpose: This study aims to elucidate green marketing strategies within the value co-creation process and model how to enhance green product purchase intentions within the sustainability landscape of the Iraqi market. The primary focus is to address and mitigate the gap between positive environmental attitudes and actual purchasing behavior in this transitional market context.
Methodology: Employing a qualitative approach, an interpretivist paradigm, and inductive logic, this study utilized the Grounded Theory strategy (Strauss and Corbin’s systematic approach). Data were collected through in-depth, semi-structured interviews with 19 experts in marketing management, industry managers, sustainability consultants, and supply chain specialists operating in the Iraqi market (including 15 primary and 4 supplementary interviews) until theoretical saturation was reached. Data analysis was conducted through three stages of open, axial, and selective coding using the constant comparative method, resulting in the extraction of 115 initial codes and corresponding categories within the paradigmatic dimensions.
Findings: The findings reveal that “Value Co-creation in Green Marketing through Multi-level Customer Engagement (based on DART components)” serves as the core phenomenon. This phenomenon is driven by causal conditions (growing environmental awareness, health-oriented preferences, functional values, and socio-ethical norms). This process operates within contextual conditions (traditional distribution structures, extreme price sensitivity, cultural-regional diversity, and the status of institutional infrastructure in Iraq) and is shaped by intervening conditions (skepticism regarding greenwashing, data gaps, label credibility, and economic-logistical uncertainties). Accordingly, identified strategies include: eco-design and sustainable packaging, value-based pricing aligned with purchasing power, accessible distribution channels, transparent evidence-based promotion, and facilitating customer participation in recycling and feedback loops. Ultimately, these strategies lead to individual and organizational consequences such as reduced perceived risk, enhanced green trust, strengthened purchase intention and repeat purchase, brand differentiation/loyalty, and long-term market sustainability.
Conclusion and Implications: Abstract environmental claims lack efficacy in the price-sensitive Iraqi market; therefore, enterprises must link sustainability to tangible consumer benefits (e.g., health, quality, durability, and cost-effectiveness). Furthermore, replacing one-way communication with transparent mechanisms of dialogue and risk assessment (value co-creation) is a fundamental prerequisite for neutralizing greenwashing effects and transforming mental attitudes into concrete purchasing behaviors in this market.
